Education Council
Duties: The Education Council formulates
policies and plans for all educational activities sponsored by
the School of Medicine which include, but are not limited to,
the undergraduate medical curriculum, graduate and postgraduate
medical education, continuing medical education, and community
education. The Education Council determines the objectives,
general form, and content of the educational programs, and
assures their quality. It may also request subordinate
committees to deal with any issues related to the educational
programs. The council oversees the integration of the School of
Medicine faculty into the Graduate Programs, considers the roles
of off-site faculty, affiliated hospitals, and community faculty
in these educational endeavors, and makes recommendations
regarding priorities for the use of available resources.
Authority: The Education Council has
authority over all educational activities. As a matter of
process, the council must submit new strategic plans or major
policy revisions to the Dean’s Council for review and comment.
Decisions that require the allocation of new resources must be
considered by the Dean’s Council and approved by the Dean.
All terms are three years unless elected to fill
a vacated seat.

Operating Guidelines
Ad hoc Committee to Develop and
Implement Methods for Evaluation of Faculty Member Teaching
The work of the Ad hoc Committee to
Develop and Implement Methods for Evaluation of Faculty Member
Teaching flows from the recommendations of the earlier Ad hoc
Committee to Develop Policies and Procedures for Evaluation of
Faculty Teaching, approved unanimously by the Education Council
in December 2006. Dr. Koeppen stated in his charge to that
committee that the institution needs the ability to assess
teaching performance and a systematic way for collecting
reliable data over the range of instructional activities in
which School of Medicine faculty members participate
(undergraduate medical education, graduate school,
residents/fellows).
Dr. Koeppen charged the Ad hoc Committee
to Develop and Implement Methods for Evaluation of Faculty
Member Teaching with the tasks of developing processes and
instruments for evaluating faculty member teaching performance
by learners in accordance with the LCME ED47 accreditation
guideline prior to the next LCME accreditation site visit during
the 2009-2010 academic year. Strategies for implementation of
the evaluation process need to be incorporated into the
accreditation self-study documents to be prepared during the
2008-2009 academic year.
