Curriculum: Phase 2
During phase 2 of the curriculum in the third year, there are three courses, Multidisciplinary Ambulatory Experience (MAX) I and II and Inpatient. These three sixteen-week components
can be taken in any order. During MAX and Inpatient, the students continue half-day each week in their Student Continuity Practice.
Phase 2 provides ambulatory and inpatient clinical experiences in the major specialties of medicine, including: family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics,
psychiatry and surgery. Office-based experiences in otolaryngology and orthopedic surgery are also offered. The emphasis in all rotations is on the acquisition of core clinical knowledge – skills and attitudes required for the practice of medicine. One of the unique rotations in
phase 2 is Beginning-to-End. This two-week rotation allows students to work one-on-one with a faculty preceptor as they follow patients admitted to the hospital through the Emergency
Department. The emphasis is on the system of care within the hospital, patient
safety, and on the impact of the hospitalization on the patient and family.
During phase 2, students come together during the “Home Weeks.” Students participate in a number of activities, such as advanced patient communication skills and advanced physical examination skills, and to present topics that cut across multiple clinical disciplines,
such as pain management.
At the end of phase 2, student must take and pass a comprehensive clinical skills assessment using standardized patients, followed by both the clinical
knowledge and clinical skills components of the USMLE Step-2 examination.
