Summer Research Fellowship Program

The program:

  • Photo of Summer Research Fellowship Program participant analyzing methyl cellulose plates.Is for college sophomores, juniors, seniors or recent graduates.
  • Is a ten-week program.
  • Is designed to provide a research enrichment experience and some exposure to clinical or dental medicine.
  • Is for students who are interested in a career in medicine, dental medicine or biomedical research and for applicants who have completed some college coursework in biology and chemistry (preferably through organic chemistry).
  • Is devoted to approximately 30 hours per week of work on a research project and 10 hours per week to required clinical experiential.
  • Provides a stipend. Housing is available.

A faculty sponsor is identified for each student. Faculty develops and makes available suitable project descriptions.

The student contacts his/her faculty sponsor in April or May and develops a research protocol.

Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) students are encouraged to apply.


Important Dates

  • February 8, 2008: Postmark date for all applications
  • May 19, 2008: First day of program
  • July 25, 2008: Last day of program
 

All applicants should:

1. Be from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the health professions (African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian) or others from disadvantaged backgrounds who meet all eligibility criteria and have a high probability of fulfilling the social and educational goals of this program.

2. Be college sophomores, juniors, seniors or recent graduates with a ‘B’ average or better who are interested in a career in medicine, dental medicine or biomedical research.

3. Have completed some college coursework in biology and chemistry (preferably through organic chemistry).

4. Submit a completed application form (Word doc) available from your counselor, this web site, or by email.

5. Submit SAT/ACT and MCAT/DAT scores where available.

6. Have an official transcript submitted from each college or university attended.

7. Provide two letters of recommendation, at least one from a science instructor.
