Aetna Health Professions Partnership Initiative
High School Student Research Apprentice Program

  • Is for 11th and 12th grade students. Priority consideration will be given to pipeline participants.
  • Is a six-week summer program.
  • Is for students interested in medicine, dental medicine or biomedical research.
  • Provides students with a research experience in one of the basic science or clinical laboratories.
  • Is held at the University of Connecticut Health Center or Central Connecticut State University.
  • Requires students to be able to commute daily to the University of Connecticut Health Center or Central Connecticut State University.
  • Enables students to participate in the High School Mini Medical/Dental School Program during the following academic year.
  • Provides students with a stipend.

Parent/guardian orientation workshops are held for all students participating in the High School Student Research Apprentice Program.

 

Important Dates

  • February 28, 2013: Postmark date for all applications
  • June 17, 2013: First day of program
  • July 26, 2013: Last day of program
 

All Applicants Should:

1. Have completed their junior year of high school, a ‘B’ average or better, and have reached their 16th birthday by June 17, 2013.

2. Be from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the health professions (African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian) or others from disadvantaged backgrounds who meet all eligibility criteria and have a high probability of fulfilling the social and educational goals of this program.

3. Be from a Connecticut high school that has an on-site School-to-Career or Career-to-Work Coordinator during the academic year, as well as summer months. This does not apply to Connecticut high school graduates or students who will be 18 years of age at the start of the program.

4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

5. Submit a completed application form (Word doc) available from your counselor, this website, or by email.

6. Submit an official transcript from each high school attended.

7. Provide two letters of recommendation, at least one from a science teacher.

8. Provide a copy of your Federal Income Tax Form 1040 or Equivalent for 2012 (submit 1040 when completed and filed).
