M.D./Ph.D. Program Admissions

Academic Preparation

  • Applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants must satisfy the course requirements specified for admissions to the School of Medicine.
  • Applicants must take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) that is required of all applicants. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required.
  • Applicants should have a significant research experience as the program seeks to enroll students who are deeply committed to careers as physician-scientists.

Application Process

  • Photo of two M.D./Ph.D. students sitting outside.All applicants to the program must complete the online AMCAS application and indicate on their application that they are applying to the M.D./Ph.D. program. Applicants must complete the M.D./Ph.D. essay in the AMCAS application.
  • When the School of Medicine receives the AMCAS application, they will direct it to the M.D./Ph.D. program. The School of Medicine will send notification to the applicant requesting letters of recommendation and completion of a Supplemental Statement (136K PDF), sent electronically. The Supplemental Statement must be completed and sent together with the school application fee to the address indicated on the Supplemental Statement. In addition, please indicate “Attention: M.D./Ph.D. Program” on the envelope.
  • Letters of recommendation must be submitted according to the guidelines indicated for School of Medicine applicants. It is important that applicants request letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with their research capabilities.
  • The application is considered complete when the following items are received: (1) the AMCAS application; (2) MCAT scores; (3) the Supplemental Statement; and (4) letters of recommendation. Applicants will be notified by email when their applications are complete.

Interviews

  • An admissions subcommittee of the M.D./Ph.D. Program Steering Committee will read and evaluate each application.
  • Selected applicants will be offered interviews.
  • On interview days, applicants will meet with medical and graduate school faculty, tour the clinical and research facilities, participate in a problem-based learning session, attend an M.D./Ph.D. Research Club session, and enjoy social events with M.D./Ph.D. students.
  • The program will provide overnight accommodations for applicants as part of the interview process.

Selection Process

  • Photo of student with her son at commencement.Applicants will be evaluated on their academic records, MCAT scores, letters of recommendation, interview reports, rigor of their research experiences, and relevance of their health care experience.
  • Admission to the program is considered on a rolling basis from November through May.
  • Admission to the program is done on a rolling basis from October through May.
  • The School of Medicine admissions committee will consider applicants not admitted to the M.D./Ph.D. program for admission to the M.D. program.
  • Accepted applicants will be invited to “Medical Second Look Weekend” in the Spring. The program will pay for all expenses for this event including travel, meals and accommodations.

Financial Support

M.D./Ph.D. students receive stipend support, a waiver of tuition and most fees and a health insurance plan for all years in the program. For 2006-2007, the stipend is $26,000 for twelve months.
