As a young aspiring student, I can remember vividly those exciting moments when a new finding or discovery was made in the research laboratory. The motivation to find time and carry out experiments came from that rewarding feeling of being the first for some new knowledge, however insignificant it may be. Having co-authored an abstract or a paper greatly solidified this motivation, which has now become a lifelong dream. Every morning, I woke up charged looking forward to another day of possible new discovery. I firmly believe that early positive experiences are decisive and defining and hope that we can instill in our students the same motivation and lifelong commitment to research and new discovery.

“Every morning, I woke up charged looking forward to another day of possible new discovery.”

I also recall that as a young trainee, I was impressed by the research accomplishments of one of my mentors. It was easy to understand and define research success. One day, I was a little surprised to hear a prominent and committed researcher saying that he will somehow always make time available to teach students. I was surprised because I had always thought that research is research and that a prominent researcher would want to focus all effort on research. But, teaching and mentoring the next generation are no less important. This perspective has made an ever-lasting impression and a constant reminder to me however busy I might be.
