“I knew that UConn shared my values about medicine as
soon as I was able to meet students and faculty on my
interview day... they are cemented in the structure
of the medical school curriculum. ”
I decided to pursue medicine because I felt
that I would somehow be able to integrate my love of the
sciences with the uniquely human art of healing. Despite
my thinking that I would need to pave my own way in order
to integrate these two desires, it became readily apparent
that UConn views medicine the same way that I do. UConn
Medical School teaches the art and science of medicine as
complementary rather than competitive and, in the process,
nurtures medical students to become compassionate and skilled
doctors.
I knew that UConn shared my values about
medicine as soon as I was able to meet students and faculty
on my interview day. These values are not only promoted
by students and faculty alike, but they are cemented in
the structure of the medical school curriculum. Within weeks
of my first year, I began seeing patients as a part of UConn’s
unique Student Continuity Practice (SCP) program where medical
students join a local practice for one afternoon a week
and continue through their fourth year. As I continued my
studies, I realized how all of my interests—ranging from
the basic sciences to the humanities and performing arts—actually
coalesced and influenced the way in which I interacted with
patients. These concepts were reinforced by our weekly Principles
of Clinical Medicine course, which allowed me to discuss
my experiences with my classmates.
UConn stresses that we should not just grow
as medical students, but as people. Good people
make good doctors; they just have to fill in the blanks
with knowledge and reasoning. I have developed in such a
way at UConn by participating in the various social, cultural
and artistic events held at the Health Center and in the
Greater Hartford community. It is truly an honor to attend
the University of Connecticut for my medical education.
