A Match Made In Medical School
View The Hartford Courant video
The 72 graduating medical students from the
University of Connecticut learned where their next destination
would be Thursday at the UConn Health Center in Farmington.
Cynthia Roque, right, hugs Laura Kester after they learn that
Roque will stay at UConn for her residency and Kester will go to
Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Lorraine Binns, second
from left, opens her envelop with her boyfriend, Junisa Grear,
to find she also will stay at UConn.

What Is 'Match Day'? It's a day of
tension and excitement for medical students. Each year the
National Residency Match Program matches thousands of
medical school graduates to residency programs around the
country.
-
How Are The Matches Made? A computer
program is designed to match the applicants' preferences
with those of the residency programs. This year, 59 percent
of the students got their first choice, but 11 percent had
to settle for their fifth choice, or worse.
